Where should I take my car if I am out of town and I have a problem?
DO NOT go to the phone book, often the catchiest ads are most often where you DO NOT want to take your car. Ask several people in your area and get input. In most areas you have upstanding shops and people will know who they are. ASK people where to go, that will usually be the best place to go. Go to a parts house and ask one of the parts guys, they are familiar with the local repair shops. If you still cannot find a reputable shop, then I recommend going to: acdelco.com
Is a car dealership the best place to take my car?
Dealerships are not usually the best place to take your car (unless it is under warranty). Car dealerships usually pay technicians less money. Typically your best technicians are in independent shops and/or are shop owners. Many dealerships are also selling services that are not recommended by their own manufacturers (i.e. oil flushes, transmission flushes, fuel injection cleaning etc.)
Whatshould I do if my check engine light comes on?
If the vehicle is running good, it is okay to drive, however you should make an appointment with your repair facility right away. If the check engine light is flashing or the vehicle is running rough, you need to get the vehicle in right away and not drive it any more than absolutely necessary, as other damage can occur, such as failed oxygen sensors or catalytic converter failure. If your car is 1996 or newer, check your gas cap, a loose or missing gas cap will turn the check engine light on
.
Where do I find the necessary maintenance for my car?
All manufacturers create a maintenance schedule for their vehicles when they are built. These are usually in or with the owners manual of the vehicle. These schedules have the maintenance intervals as well as recommended fluids. When these recommendations are followed, your vehicle has its best chance for living a very long time. If you cannot find this information, we would be very happy to help you with this.
Can I drop my car off when you are not open?
Yes… we have "After hours" or "Early bird" drop off available. There are envelopes (and pens) outside the front door, please fill out the envelope, place keys inside envelope and drop through the mail slot on the front door. If you would like to use your own envelope (for faster drop off time) please write the following information on it.
- Name
- Phone number you can be reached at
- License of vehicle. (if convenient)
- What is actual problem with the vehicle for what service(s) do you want performed
What information should I give when bring my vehicle in for repair?
- Be sure to
leave a note or tell the receptionist what is actually wrong with the
car. DO NOT tell us what you think is wrong with the car, this often
leads technicians in the wrong direction. A customer that has a car
that stumbles when it leaves a stop sign will often come in and say
“I think my fuel filter is plugged” The vital information
is “car that stumbles when it leaves a stop sign
- Give all information you can: when, where, hot, cold, slow speeds, highway
speeds. Some people are afraid to give too much information in fear
that it may cost them more. It is actually quite opposite, the more
info you give us, the more we have to work with to fix what you want
repaired, the first time the vehicle is brought in
- Leave a contact number you can be reached at and leave a maximum amount that
can be spent on the car without contact. This often speeds up the
repair process.
- Tell the receptionist when you would like to get your car back when it is
dropped off.
Be sure there is enough gas/fuel in the vehicle to perform necessary diagnosis and
test driven. It may be hard to believe, but vehicles are brought in
empty of fuel, often these vehicle require more than normal warm-ups
and test drives to perform proper diagnosis (Murphy's law???)
I took my car to the dealer and they recommended I do a fuel injection flush and a transmission flush, should I let them do this?
Many dealerships and some repair shops are also selling services that are not recommended by the manufacturer of the vehicle (i.e. oil flushes, transmission flushes, fuel injection cleaning etc.). They can do more damage than good!!! Some vehicles do need a fuel injection cleaning, most do not but some do. This is done to correct a poor running or rough idle condition. If your car is running and idling good, you do not need this service performed.
